LGBT+ Adoption & Fostering Week is an annual campaign organised by New Family Social, a UK charity that supports people from the LGBT+ community who are considering fostering or adoption.
The campaign was initially started in 2012 by LGBT+ adopters and foster carers who aimed to raise awareness and drive change, following statistics showing that 1 in 31 adoptions in England were to same-sex couples. In 2021, this figure stood at 1 in 6.
The theme this is year is #BeTheChange which asks LGBT+ people to think about the range of vulnerable children they could parent or care for. Each day will focus on sharing stories from LGBT+ adopters and foster carers already being the change for some of the country’s most vulnerable children.
You can read more about their work on their website, which will share stories from LGBT+ carers and adoptive parents, up to date statistics and other information and support.
Today there is still a significant need for more foster carers to provide children with a safe and caring home. The intent is that LGBT+ people feel supported and free of barriers to fostering and adoption. For some LGBT+ young people, it can also be important to have representation and understanding from their foster carers.
We at Red Kite Fostering welcome foster carers from all backgrounds and will not discriminate based upon any protected characteristic. If you'd like to know more about fostering with us, please get in touch - we'd love to hear from you.
